UNITE HERE Local 355 conducted a survey of nearly 1,000 tourism and hospitality workers. Results show that inadequate wages are leaving workers with unstable housing options, making unacceptable sacrifices to put food on the table, and with limited time to care for their families and communities. We will release results in a preliminary report that examines the impact of inadequate hourly wages on South Florida workers and makes the case for a $20 minimum wage. This action will highlight two keystone workplaces in the Miami-Dade economy: Compass food service at the Marlins’ LoanDepot Stadium and LSG Sky Chefs at Miami International Airport.
Currently, the median wage for hourly workers employed by Compass at the Marlins’ LoanDepot stadium is $14.30 per hour, and 80% of them earn less than $16 an hour.
In depth results will be released at the action on May 2 where workers will share personal stories of why South Florida workers need a raise to $20. Compass workers recently picketed a Compass cafeteria at the World Bank in Washington D.C. with a similar wage demand.
UNITE HERE Local 355 is a labor union that represents over 5,000 members working in the hotel, gaming, food service, and airport industries in South Florida.
